Throughout this project, I will be creating lots of documents explaining my research process and all the analysis that went into my project including things such as the inspiration behind the game as a whole, the character designs and other important elements such as story and character personality. When creating the initial idea for my project, I was heavily inspired by the game Cookie Run: Ovenbreak.
Cookie Run: Ovenbreak is a Korean side-scrolling arcade game for mobile, created by the company Devsisters. The game is a fast paced running game where you play as different cookies trying to escape from the witch who created them to eat. Each cookie has a new, unique design with different abilities ranging from weapons to defence, speed and all kind of of fun attributes.
The main inspirations for my game within cookie-run were the characters known as 'the citrus squad' which include orange, lemon, lime and grapefruit cookie. As my games main characters would be inspired by these four fruits, I needed to make a big divide between my game and the inspiration with their designs, character personality and abilities. To do this, I heavily changed key elements from the inspiration: Making my orange-based character, zest, a highly energised 'gremlin' who causes chaos with her slingshot. I also changed elements within my Lime and Lemon inspired characters, Citrus and Tang, by switching the genders and personalities from dull and grumpy to cute and friendly. Instead of having my grapefruit inspired character be a younger sibling like character, I had my grapefruit character, Mama Pink, be a mother figure for the other three and her hope becoming a place to restore energy
A second inspiration for my project took place within game-style music videos for Vocaloid songs that happened to be in a similar style of fun and bouncy animation with less detailed animation but still a lot of motion within the still images using different editing techniques.
The first inspiration was PartyXParty, A song telling a fun story about a group of adventurers (every common type you'd find in an RPG or DnD game.) As my game would be in an RPG style, this heavily influenced the overall style and different elements to include within my project such as character poses and how to introduce characters in a fun way and show their personalities through simple images and editing.
The main differences between PartyXParty and my project is that I have a very small number of characters in a group, only having three playable characters, unlike PartyXParty which has a group of six with different abilities to aid on their adventures. My characters are meant to be a group of kids who rise up and become heroes when nobody else can, making a harsh difference between my inspiration and my actual product. Though I will recognise that this inspiration did help influence the overall style of my animation within my project.
The second piece of inspiration from the same type of content is the game inspired Vocaloid song known as Death should not have taken thee. The animated video for this song takes heavy inspiration from old RPG's where the hero would be forced to go off and save a princess. In this song, the hero is tasked by the king to fight against an army but dies in the process as his 'level was not high enough' and so he is brought back to life by the king. It's a fun and bouncy video with lots of comedic elements within the lyrics which are emphasised within the animation.
This has inspired me within the comedic and bouncy elements of the animation, helping me realise that I wanted to keep my characters personalities within the project and help show off their different abilities in unique ways. Overall, this video is a heavy influence and inspiration on my editing style and how I want my final project to look once it is finished; including the brightly coloured backgrounds and character art shown in Death should not have taken thee. I will mirror this within my storyboards and rough draft that I will create in the following week and continuing on into my Finished product.
